The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MoSPI) will commemorate the 19th Statistics Day on June 29, 2025, at Dr. Ambedkar International Centre, New Delhi. This annual celebration honors the legacy of Professor Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis, a visionary statistician whose contributions laid the foundation for modern economic planning in India.
Why is Statistics Day Celebrated?
Statistics Day is observed each year to raise awareness—especially among the youth—about the vital role of statistics in socio-economic planning, evidence-based policymaking, and national development. The day is celebrated on the birth anniversary of Prof. P.C. Mahalanobis, a pioneer who established the Indian Statistical Institute and launched the National Sample Survey (NSS) in 1950.
Theme for Statistics Day 2025: 75 Years of National Sample Survey
Each year, Statistics Day is centered around a theme of national relevance. The theme for 2025 is “75 Years of National Sample Survey,” recognizing the NSS’s enduring contribution to the nation by producing credible and timely statistical data for better governance and planning.
Over the past seven decades, the National Sample Survey has evolved into a critical tool for understanding India’s diverse economic, demographic, and social dynamics. This year’s theme pays tribute to its legacy and forward-looking relevance in an increasingly data-driven world.
