Big Boost for Fisheries in Northeast India!
In a major step towards strengthening fisheries infrastructure in Northeast India, Union Minister Shri Rajiv Ranjan Singh (alias Lalan Singh), who heads the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying (MoFAH&D), will inaugurate the Fish Festival Tripura and lay the foundation for the ambitious Integrated Aquapark in Kailashahar, Tripura on 18th May 2025. This Aquapark is being developed under the Pradhan Mantri Matsya Sampada Yojana (PMMSY), a flagship scheme for fisheries development in India.
PMMSY Project in Tripura: Driving Modern Aquaculture in Tripura
With an investment of ₹42.4 crore, the Kailashahar Aquapark will become a game-changer for aquaculture in Tripura. Funded through PMMSY, the facility will include modern hatcheries, feed mills, cold storage, training centres, and marketing hubs—all under one roof. This Integrated Aquapark Tripura project aligns with the government’s vision to build self-reliance in the fisheries sector and provide holistic support to all stakeholders.
Empowering Fish Farmers Through KCC and Support Under PMMSY
As part of the Fish Festival in Tripura, the government will distribute Kisan Credit Cards (KCC) for fish farmers, enabling easier access to credit. The event will also recognize top Fish Farmer Producer Organizations (FFPOs), fisheries startups, and cooperatives that are contributing to the growth of sustainable aquaculture in India. These initiatives are part of the wider outreach under PMMSY, which supports inclusive development across all regions.
Tripura: A Rising Star in India’s Blue Revolution
Tripura is rapidly emerging as a model state under the Blue Revolution, thanks to its high fish consumption rate of over 29 kg per capita and increasing investments in infrastructure. Over the past decade, the state has received ₹319 crore worth of fisheries projects under PMMSY and related schemes. The Integrated Aquapark Tripura will strengthen this momentum and serve as a central hub for modern fisheries infrastructure in Northeast India.
The Role of Integrated Aquaparks in India’s Fisheries Future
Integrated Aquaparks, such as the one in Kailashahar, are not just physical assets—they represent a transformative shift in how fisheries development in India is approached. Built under the PMMSY, these facilities follow a hub-and-spoke model, offering end-to-end solutions across the entire fisheries value chain—from seed to sale. This ensures higher productivity, lower wastage, and greater market access for fish farmers and fisheries startups in India.
A Vision for Youth, Women & Rural Prosperity
What sets the Integrated Aquapark Tripura apart is its strong focus on empowering rural youth and women through training, entrepreneurship, and employment in the fisheries and aquaculture value chain. With strategic support under PMMSY, Tripura is poised to become a leader in sustainable aquaculture in India, paving the way for similar developments in other states.
Conclusion
The launch of the Fish Festival Tripura and the foundation laying of the ₹42.4 crore Integrated Aquapark in Tripura mark a significant milestone for the region. Backed by PMMSY, the project not only advances fisheries development in India but also empowers local communities with opportunities for growth, innovation, and sustainable livelihoods. Under the leadership of Rajiv Ranjan Singh, initiatives like these continue to push the boundaries of the Blue Revolution in India.
